Shield pennywort: declared pest

Shield pennywort, whorled marshpennywort, umbrella plant (Hydrocotyle verticillata) is a declared pest in Western Australia (WA). This article describes the nature of the plant with links to requirements land owners/occupiers must adhere to and pest control methods.

Form: aquatic

Status: not present in WA

A creeping, terrestrial or aquatic plant native to North and South America.

Appearance

Leaves: Round leaves mounted centrally on vertical stalks up to 15 centimetres long. Leaf marked with veins that extend like the spikes of a wheel from the centre of the leaf to its margin.

Flowers: Inconspicuous small white flowers are borne in tight groups at the tip of stalks scattered among the leaves. Flowers carried in groups of threes.

An environmental weed that grows in wet/damp places and shallow waters such as marshes, riparian margins, nutrient-rich pools, irrigation and drainage canals, seeps, and muddy sites.
