Sicklepod (Senna tora) is a declared pest in Western Australia (WA). This article describes the nature of the plant with links to requirements land owners/occupiers must adhere to and pest control methods.

Form: herbaceous — annual or short-lived perennial

Status: present in WA

Appearance

A small erect glabrous shrub; up to 90cm tall, native of tropical America. It tolerates fairly low soil fertilities and moisture levels, but grows tallest where conditions are better.

Leaves: 7.5cm long, with two to four pairs of broad leaflets, each one to four centimetres long and fringed with miniature hairs. Leaf stalk bears two glands, one between each of the two lower pairs of leaflets.

Flowers: Paired at the basis of the uppermost leaves, yellow, about nine millimetres broad, on a six millimetres stalk; three of the stamens infertile.

Seeds: The plant produces very slender, linear, somewhat curved pods, 12–25cm long, and three to six millimetres wide. Pods contain 20 to 30 seeds each nearly 3mm long, brown and flat seeds.
