Horses
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development works with the state’s horse industry to promote biosecurity, the awareness of reportable and emergency diseases, and identification and movement requirements.
Western Australian horse owners and other industry stakeholders have an important role to play in identifying, and responding to reportable diseases including potential emergency animal disease incidents, and in promoting and following good biosecurity. Information is available to help horse owners plan their own biosecurity.
The department provides a system to enable owners to identify their horses using brands or other approved identification. Owners who register as an owner of livestock are issued with a property identification code (PIC) which confirms the properties on which their horses are usually kept.
The department regulates the movement of horses from interstate into WA to minimise the risk of disease introduction including a post-introduction surveillance period, treatment and testing requirements.
