Western Australian seed potato exports are increasing but new markets are required if this trend is to continue.

The Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia has produced a report "Markets for Western Australian seed potatoes,"  which investigates new export market opportunities for WA seed potatoes.

The report can be downloaded from the right hand side of the page.

To investigate new market opportunities for WA seed potatoes, a market attractiveness index was developed, which considered the following factors:

  • market premium
  • market growth
  •  market size
  • GDP growth
  • trade balance
  • change in trade balance
  • comparative advantage in distance
  • comparative advantage in customs tariff
  • trade relations.

The market attractiveness index was calculated for 77 countries which import more than 1 million USD worth of seed potatoes annually.

Of these, Pakistan, Brazil, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Niger and Bangladesh were selected as a group of countries with potential for WA seed potato exports.
