Appearance
Erect bushy, aromatic perennial herb, 30-70 centimetres high, reproducing by seed.
Stems: Much branched, square in cross-section, covered in white hairs, woody at base.
Leaves: Hairy on upper surface and very hairy to woolly on the under side. Leaves opposite in pairs, rounded up to seven centimetres diameter and crinkled in appearance. Leaf edge is bluntly toothed, veins sunken on upper surface, prominent on lower side.
Flowers: White, 6-10 millimetres long, formed in dense clusters surrounding the stem at the nodes.
Fruit: Calyx develops into a burr with 10 backward curved hooks.
Seed: Brown or black with four in each burr, one to two millimetres long, oval and slightly roughened.
Agricultural and economic impact
Contaminates wool.
